Free Comics

Today was Free Comic Book day, the one day of the year where select comic books do not cost a dime. This was my first time ever taking part in this event, so I was pretty stoked. I even had some trouble going back to sleep at about 7 AM because I was so excited. That isn't a feeling that hits me very often.

Anyway, I checked out the website for this year's FCBD and got a look at the comics. From that list, I'd assumed my comic shop would have everything there, but alas, they did not. I wanted to get Love and Capes #7, but they didn't have it. I wanted to get Comic Book Diner, but that wasn't available either. There was a ton of other stuff I wanted, but my shop limited the number of free goodies you could get to three, and this included the figurines. Would you believe I passed on the Iron Man figure so I could get a third free comic? Tis true.

The three comics, I did get, are as follows: Marvel Adventures Iron Man & Hulk & Spider-Man, Amelia Rules, and Gyro Gearloose. The Marvel Adventures Iron Man & Hulk & Spidey was one of the first free comics to disappear off the counter so I'm glad I was able to nab one. I've been a big fan of Don Rosa's Uncle Scrooge comics so Gyro Gearloose was an instant pick up. As for Amelia Rules, I heard it was good and its something I haven't read before, which was one of the main reasons I was looking forward to FCBD, the opportunity to check out comics for free (without the need to Byrne-Steal, that is.)

I did read some of Tiny Titans, a book that looks to be DC's counter to Mini Marvels. This book contained cute, funny stories about the heroes and villains of the Teen Titans world. It may be a book I buy regularly if it becomes a monthly series. It was another popular book of the day and was gone 3 plus hours I spent in the store.

I suppose I could have went to another comic shop to grab more comics but I just didn't feel like making another trip. Outside of the free comics I picked up, I also bought some super cheap comics, which I will blog about in another entry.

Sure, I didn't get everything I wanted but it was nice to be able to get something and this was one of the few times I'd ever seen so many kids in my comic shop. This is a holiday I could really get used to.

I've got to check with one of my friends if he was at a comic store during this event.

He plays HeroClix, so I know the Iron Man Clix would be right up his alley.

I've always felt Clark Kent has had one of the poorest disguises of all time for a secret Identity. All he does is straight up his "S" curl so it isn't visible and put on some glasses. Hooray for Reprints!

The Green Goblin has often been touted as Spider-Man's deadliest foe. He is what the Joker is to Batman. I wonder if Stan knew back when Gobby first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #14 that the Goblin would become the menace that he is to Spidey today. What makes the Goblin such an interesting foe isn't the costume. No. Much like Spider-Man, Gobby is such a great villain because the man underneath the suit is fascinating. Norman Osborn is one effed up dude to say the least. He was so annoyed with Spider Man getting in his way that he the battle between the two of them personal. He discovered Spidey's secret ID, revealed his own identity to the wall-crawler and would later go on to make Spidey's life a living nightmare. Gobby not only screws up Spidey's life, he screws up the lives of those Spidey cares about like Flash Thompson or if your name is Gwen Stacy, thinks ain't lookin' too good for you. Marvel Wants to Hear From YOU!

In the letter page of Amazing Spider-Man #565, Spidey editor Steve Wacker filled the page with nothing but negative letters from readers that hate Brand New Day. Who says Marvel doesn't listen to the fans? And what's more, Mr. Wacker has even asked us to write in and tell them how we feel. Can you believe that? It takes class to run nothing but angry letters and a couple of those to the right are pretty nasty. My mother actually suggested I write to the editor and state my feelings on the molestation of Spider-Man in ASM. I'd been meaning to write them, but I just never sat down to do so. With the editor of the Spidey books kindly saying that the letter's page is "the place to vent," I think the time has finally come for me to express myself. I don't know if it will get printed since I've stopped reading ASM, but if they take my letter and many others that are outraged by BND to heart, then that's all that matters.
