Holy Moly

Yes, I do read stuff besides Spidey. I can't afford to pick up 30+ comics a week, but I do enjoy the limited selection that's on my file at my comic shop.

Anyway, a few months ago, I saw the first sisue of Billy Bastion and the Magic of Shazam! There was a single copy left and like an idiot, I didn't pick it up. After reading about the comic from Chris's Blog, I knew I should have picked it up. Sure enough, when I tried to find a copy of the first issue at my comic shop, they didn't have any. Thankfully, I didn't make the same misake when issue #2 came out a few weeks ago.

Billy Bastion & the Magic of Shazam! is written and drawn my Mike Kunkel. And if you're looking at this cover, or you've flipped through an issue and thought that it's a kid's book, you'd be right. Yes, it is a comic geared toward's kids, but so is Tiny Titans and Mini-Marvels and those comics are fantastic. Just because it's for kids doesn't mean adults won't enjoy it. If I were a betting man, I'd lay odds that The Magic of Shazam! was being purcahsed by more adults than it is kids.

Anyhoo, in issue #2, we learn that Billy and his sister Mary aren't the only ones that got powers from saying the magic word "Shazam." A 14 year old boy named Theo Adam was chosen as a champion and like Billy, he'd transform into a grown up version of himself, except he was called Black Adam. Problem was, Theo was more or less the opposite of Billy. Where Billy wants to do good, Theo wants to cause chaos and destruction. Fortunately, Theo can't remember the word that grants him his powers. However, that doesn't stop him harnessing the power from the statues of the Seven Deadly Evils of Man. These status now have physical forms and are following Theo's orders. Needless to stay, stuff is gonna hit the fan in issue #3.

This comic is highly recommended. I don't care if you're 5 or 50. Billy Bastion & the Magic of Shazam! is for comic readers of all ages. I will so be there when issue #3 drops.

#1 is still available for reorder, if your comic shop is the kind that's nice enough to get it back in for you.
That actually did cross my mind. And my comic shop is cool like that.

Foxxy Cleopatra: "Shazam!" *Punchies!*
With your hate of the current direction of Amazing Spider-Man and your previous posts it isn't impossible to believe you read more than Spider-Man.

Never read a Shazam (Captain Marvel) story before, couldn't see the appeal of his charcter, all I know about him is that he's a kid? How many captain Marvels appeared so far? So the kid says Shazam and tadaaah (Captain Marvel).

I said already I never read any of this guy's stories, what do you recommend for someone from outside this major?
Well I haven't read any of Mike Kunkel's other works, so I wouldn't know what to recommend.

But if you want to read another Captain Marvel story and not worry about tons of other history or continuity, I'd recommend Shazam: The Monster Society of Evil by Jeff Smith, author of the Bone comics. It's a four part mini series that gives us a modern take on Captain Marvel. Great for kids and adults.

Amazing Spider-Man #573 Variant

As I've stated in the past, I'm not one for variant comic covers. The limited print run of these covers is an excuse for the comic distributors to jack up the price on something I wonder will stay under the $3 price tag. Regardless of my thoughts on variant covers and the current direction of Amazing Spider-Man, I still think the variant for Amazing # 573 is five different kinds of Awesome. Note that the all powerful, immortal Stephen Colbert is on the cover, paying homage to Amazing Fantasy #15. Not only does the cover bring a smile to my face, but I think the artwork is pretty solid and is drawn by Marvel's EiC, Joe Quesada. I may not be all that fond of the guy, but he's one heck of an artist. My only knock against the art here is that Spidey's costume looks baggy. If you don't feel like paying an absurd amount of cash for a flippin' comic book just to get this variant, having a digital version cover, or the Marvle.com logo in the right hand corner, right...

Marvel Wants to Hear From YOU!

In the letter page of Amazing Spider-Man #565, Spidey editor Steve Wacker filled the page with nothing but negative letters from readers that hate Brand New Day. Who says Marvel doesn't listen to the fans? And what's more, Mr. Wacker has even asked us to write in and tell them how we feel. Can you believe that? It takes class to run nothing but angry letters and a couple of those to the right are pretty nasty. My mother actually suggested I write to the editor and state my feelings on the molestation of Spider-Man in ASM. I'd been meaning to write them, but I just never sat down to do so. With the editor of the Spidey books kindly saying that the letter's page is "the place to vent," I think the time has finally come for me to express myself. I don't know if it will get printed since I've stopped reading ASM, but if they take my letter and many others that are outraged by BND to heart, then that's all that matters. Dear ASM Staff, Do you know what ...

Back to Red & Blue

You gotta love Spider-Man's black costume. Its simple, sleek design has been a fan favorite for more than 20 years. It looks just as cool in the cartoons as well. As sweet a costume as it is, I'm always happy to see the web-head return to the classic red & blue tights, which is what he does in the Spectacular Spider-Man episode "Intervention." This episode moves at a slower pace than others but considering the heart of it is Peter's inner conflict with the symbiote, I think moving slower was the right choice here. This episode was written by Greg Weisman, the show's producer. He hasn't written an episode since "Survival of the Fittest," the series premier episode, so it really was a pleasure to see him return to the writing helm. The good news is that aunt May, despite suffering from a heart attack in the previous episode is doing fine. The bad news is, the bill is pretty huge and this puts Peter in a foul mood. Mary Jane, Gwen and Liz all tr...
