Spectacular Spider-Man No More

26 episodes. Two seasons. The Spectacular Spider-Man, the best animated version of Spider-Man has officially been canceled. I'd actually read the news on this last week and like many of you, I was angry and disappointed. This show was Batman: The Animated Series for Spider-Man fans. It was just that good and could have easily gone up to 65 episodes or more like series producer Greg Weisman had planned. 


"But, Reg, we're getting an Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon in 2011!"

And because said cartoon is coming, this means the death of Spectacular. Why create another Spidey show so soon when they already had a the best Spidey show ever and an amazing crew handling said show? Does not compute.

At any rate, I'd love for Spectacular to be continued somehow. If not in animation, perhaps in comic form. I'd love for Marvel to just give Greg a comic to let him continue his work but, but it doesn't seem likely. Speaking of Greg, he really seems to be a "take it on the chin" kinda guy. Truly, he's one of the best in the business and just an all around great guy. 

Ultimate Spider-Man will have to be one incredible show because Spectacular pretty much raised the bar for Spidey in animation. Lots of fans are already ready to bear their fangs at Ultimate, and it's not hard to see why. I mean, this show did kill off Spectacular and if a whole new crew is involved (which seems to be the case way things are going) then Ultimate could end up joing Spider-Man Unlimited as one of the most forgettable Spidey shows. I suppose we'll have to see how things pan out.

I'll be picking up the season two DVD of Spectacular whenever it comes out and I'll try to give Ultimate a chance.

R.I.P, Spectacular Spider-Man. I guess only the good really do die young.

I heard it's an "USM Team-Up", so from Spider-Man's equivalent of B:TAS that is cut off too soon, to Spider-Man's equal of BTB&TB, unless it has serious stories like the comics do, and we have Peter & his supporting cast

Yeah, you heard right. Batman: The Brave and the Bold turned out to be a solid show. I guess it helped that it has great talent behind it. If USM can wind up in a similar boat, then things could really look up for the show. Still, Disney, Marvel or whatever suits are in charge really screwed up by killing Spectacular.

Composer Shout Out: Yuji Ohno

For my money, one of the best composers in the music business would have to be Yuji Ohno. This guys is mostly known for his work on just about anything that has to do with Lupin III. After the last few weeks, it's hard for me not to think of Ohno's compositions when Lupin comes to mind. (I've been listening to his various albums to get my jazz fix.) Ohno's works are primarily jazz-inspired and even some of his earliest efforts on Lupin music in the '70s is still considered extraordinary. Not only has he covered music for the various Lupin series and movies, he's also done music for all three PS2 Lupin games. The man is also an accomplished musical genius even when he isn't working on music for Lupin. Tokyo City Lights is a jazz masterpiece. R.I.P Mickey Mouse

In case you haven't heard , Wayne Allwine, the voice actor of Mickey Mouse passed away at the age of 62. He had been voice the world's most famous mouse since 1977. The original voice actor for Mickey was Walt Disney himself. Allwine's imitation of Disney's voice was spot on. Most of the the Mickey Mouse cartoons I've seen were voiced by Allwine. 'Tis a sad day in cartoon history. R.I.P, Wayne Allwine.

Spectacular Art of Andie Tong

Andie Tong is the regular artist of the Spectacular Spider-Man's UK comic book. Now I haven't read any of the issues, but I did come across his deviant art page last night, which feature some of the pages from what looks to be a superb comic. I love all the quirky posses Andie draws Spidey in. He also does a terrific job on the webbing and the half-mask. I can take big or small eyes on a Spider-Man mask, but I think Andie gets the right combo. The eyes aren't too big and they aren't too small. Andie also draws a very excellent Green Goblin. It'd be sweet if he could do the art for some of the Spider books in the states. James Offredi does the coloring on Andie's artwork. Needless to say, James does an amazing job, making Andie's already gorgeous art look even better. I know its only artwork and I haven't read any of these issues, but from what I've seen, it looks like the stories in the Spectacular Spider-Man UK book are a heck of a lot more interes...
